Ever since Prompted launched in July 2019, I have been hosting flash fiction prompt contests on Instagram! (There was a brief Facebook stint too, but I decided to abandon that after several months of low participation.) I’ve loved seeing how the Instagram community comes together to support each other’s writing.
So, you might be wondering how the contests work. Well, every other month, I choose one to three prompts (typically from Pinterest) to post on my Instagram page (@cassandrahammwrites). Then, I encourage people to respond with a flash fiction piece inspired by the prompt, typically between 150 and 300 words. As of now, each prompt is open for two days, and I announce the winners at the end of the contest on both my blog and my Instagram story.
As you might imagine, it’s difficult to choose winners! So, for each contest (except the early ones), I ask someone to help me judge. That person promotes the contest, responds to the participants, and helps me choose a winner for each prompt. I really don’t know how I did it without fellow judges before. To all my previous and future judges, I appreciate you greatly. You make my life so much easier.
These prompt contests have been such a fun experience. They have inspired both me and the people who have participated, and, stressful though they may be, I’m so glad I decided to start hosting them.
I’d love to have you participate, whether you consider yourself a writer or not! Check out my Instagram page, where I’ll announce contest dates and prompts. Even if you don’t want to participate, I would highly recommend checking out the contests in general because seriously, the entries are always so amazing.
